The Vancouver Games are over and the successful athletes got high attention on the their arrival at home. Fans were waiting at the airport, there is no other event, which gets the public interest as the Olympics. And a sport like Cross-Country has a big profit, the most successful athletes among all the athletes at the Games was Marit Björgen, no other athletes could reach 3x Gold/1x Silver /1x Bronze. Her name will stand forever as the queen at the Vancouver Games 2010. Through the TV transmission premium time in Europe between 19 - 23 h, the TV quotas were high and Cross-Country could reach best quotas ever.
But Cross-Country is also a popular sport and I'm very happy to hear, many of big Popular Cross-Countries races could reach best participation ever. Besides having good snow conditions in many countries, Cross-Country got a life trend image, being active and healthy, Cross-Country seems to have the right attitude for everybody. And even we have the chance to increase the general interest for the sport and to win more active skiers, but we need the cooperation of all involved partners like industry, tourism, FIS, National Ski Associations, all Organizers of Cross-Country etc.. The Time and opportunity would be right, let's find a common way to go for it.
The World Cup turns to his three final weeks and will take place in the most traditional resorts we have, great audience will be expected on site, the Olympic athletes will be celebrated. Starting next weekend with Lahti (FIN), moving to Drammen and Oslo (NOR), the pre Worlds gets a special high interest and finishing the World Cup season in Stockholm and Falun (SWE). None of the World Cup decisions are done yet and many athletes fight for World Cup rankings at the end of season. The maximum of 820 World Cup points can be reached next 3 weekends.
And let's start the next Weekend with Lahti and of course not to forget the Vasaloppet, the biggest popular Race with over 56'000 participators through the whole week.
