VENUE DESCRIPTION

Düsseldorf is the capital city of the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia located in the Rhine Ruhr area, which is the most populated metropolitan area in Germany. Düsseldorf is widely known as the centre of many different economic sectors (telecommunication, advertising, fashion etc.) as well as a city presenting extraordinary sports events. Despite the surpassing amount of different kind of professional sports (e.g. football, table tennis, ice-hockey etc.), Düsseldorf provides events like the DTM Presentation (2006-2009) and the FIS World Cup (since 2002) close to the Rhine as the outstanding highlight of the year. You got to need a lot of imagination, reading about a FIS World Cup taking place in a city lying 38 meters above sea level. Every year since 2002 the boardwalk of the Rhine River has been covered with 3000 m³ artificial snow, which is provided by a snow dome located in the neighboring city Neuss. The unique track divides the Old Town from the Rhine and offers plenty of space for interested viewers. In 2008 over 350.000 spectators came to watch athletes going for gold. Beside the main event, a side event program (e.g. toboggan run) offers a lot of different attractions for the whole family. After the competition has ended, the track is abolished by dispatching the snow into the Rhine River, which is absolutely eco-friendly as the snow is produced solely out of potable water.

OTHER SPORT EVENTS

Düsseldorf offers a wide range of different kind of sports. On the level of competitive sports, Fortuna Düsseldorf (football), DEG Metro Stars (ice-hockey), Borussia Düsseldorf (table tennis), Giants Düsseldorf (Basketball), just to mention a few, are highly competitive in their national leagues. Other top events taking place in Düsseldorf: METRO Group Marathon (10.000 competitors/ 400.000 spectators); international Athletics PSD Bank Meeting; DTM Presentation (210.000 spectators); ARAG World Team Cup (ca. 75.000 spectators)
