VENUE DESCRIPTION

Engadin St. Moritz (SUI)

The sunniest high-lying alpine valley in Switzerland!

Lying at 1,800 m above sea level, the Engadin St. Moritz region enjoys no fewer than 322 days of sunshine every year and is blessed with spectacular mountain panoramas. With its dry, healthy climate, snow-sure position, seemingly endless expanse of frozen lakes and spectacular light conditions, this winter destination has been capturing the hearts of visitors from all over the world for over 150 years.

It is known as the largest snow sport region in Switzerland and home to a huge choice of first-class leisure activities and facilities. These range from an extensive network of cross-country ski trails through enchanting winter landscapes or along the Engadin Ski Marathon route from Maloja to S-chanf to wide and spacious ski and snowboard pistes for every level of ability right through to new trend sports including snowkiting, freeriding or ice climbing: in short, Engadin St. Moritz has everything sports enthusiasts could possibly wish for. The range of winter sport activities is further enhanced by high-calibre events, such as the Engadin Ski Marathon and the Frauenlauf, the White Turf horse races on the frozen Lake St. Moritz, the Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow, or the exhilaratingly fast Cresta bob race.

Seeking peace and relaxation? Nowhere else can you "switch off" so easily as on a leisurely winter hike through the snow-laden landscape of this beautiful alpine region. The Upper Engadin offers also a wide range of cultural or traditional events.

COMPETITION INFORMATION

The network of cross-country skiing trails extends for 200 stunningly beautiful kilometres through the Engadin St. Moritz region. Forty-two of these kilometres are the most famous in Switzerland - the Marathon track between Maloja and S-chanf across frozen lakes and wide open plains, past picturesque villages and through snow-laden forests. And all around, the mountain peaks form a worthy, yet never oppressive, backdrop.

The Engadin Skimarathon is one of the largest cross-country skiing events in the world. It begins with the Frauenlauf (Ladies' Race) one week before the main race: on the first weekend in March, around 1,000 female cross-country skiers compete over a 17 km route between Samedan and S-chanf. At the Engadin Sikmarathon itself, well over 11,000 cross-country skiers brave the 42 km of the long trail from Maloja to S-chanf or the easier half marathon distance from Maloja to Pontresina.

The spectacular scenery and perfect infrastructure attract Nordic fans already from the beginning of December, when snow-sure cross-country trails are being prepared.
